About the innovation
A Sistema.bio bio-digester is a system that receives organic waste and produces renewable energy in the form of methane-rich biogas. The system utilizes naturally occurring bacteria within the sealed, anaerobic “reactor” to breakdown organic waste such as animal manure and other farm waste. The by-products of this process include biogas that can be used for cooking, heating, or electricity generation, and a safe and potent organic fertilizer that can support local agriculture. The system displaces the time and cost of traditional fuel sources, allows for sustainable mechanization and increasing harvests.

In India, over two million smallholder farmers grow food for nearly one billion people. These farms grow 80% of the food consumed today, and are the cornerstones of rural economies, yet lack smart investments that can make significant gains for their farms over the long term. Their success or failure will impact the world’s biggest challenges: poverty, food security, climate change, and environmental sustainability. A Sistema.bio bio-digester is a system that receives organic waste and produces renewable energy in the form of methane-rich biogas. The system utilizes naturally occurring bacteria within the sealed, anaerobic “reactor” to breakdown organic waste such as animal manure and another farm waste. The by-products of this process include biogas that can be used for cooking, heating, or electricity generation, and a safe and potent organic fertilizer that can support local agriculture. The system displaces the time and cost of traditional fuel sources, allows for sustainable mechanization and increasing harvests. The improved economic performance of farmers paired with reduced ecological impact results in improved rural economies that can also be better stewards of the land they inhabit. The Sistema.bio business case is based on the idea that small farmers, families, rural communities and international development organizations will invest to make these small farms more productive, efficient and ecologically sustainable through waste-to-energy technology. By building a business model around this technology and value proposition, we believe we can reach over three hundred thousand people by 2021 with Sistema.bio products, service, and financing. Buen Manejo Del Campo India, Private limited, (Sistema.bio India) will sell, finance and service Sistema.bio products directly to small farmers in India, and will provide products, training and quality control for promotion and distribution partners (channel partners). Sistema.bio India is a fully owned subsidiary of Buen Manejo del Campo (BMC Mexico), the developer and manufacturer of Sistema.bio products. Our revenue model is driven by sales of our Sistema.bio products, service and financing packages to farmers and distribution partners. We charge a high gross margin on the products so that we are able to include the wrap-around service, financing and operational costs in one price. Sales volumes drive net profit margins as we gain overhead and operational efficiencies at scale. Our sales and promotion teams use existing rural networks, groups and cooperatives to promote at demonstration events and provide free one-on-one farm diagnostics and on-going service within the guarantee period. The product sells because of a high return on investment to the farmer, by providing additional energy services, and for perceived quality of life improvements. Farmers are given the option to pay through instalments to remove the cash barrier. Having direct access to the Sistema.bio line of products from manufacturing plant in Mexico is a central competitive advantage, giving Sistema.bio India access to the best price on the highest quality biogas equipment in the world. Our manufacturing and distribution uses ISO-9001. The main components of the complete technology package are assembled in Mexico, but this could evolve with time to have local assembly lines in India. Our product line includes 13 different digester reactor sizes, secondary treatment tanks, and biogas accessories such as stoves, boilers, heaters, and motors. This variety of products and the ability to interconnect and integrate different components and sizes allows the product to serve a very wide range of farm and organic waste streams without modification of the core offering. The entire installation, data collection and technical assistance process is core to ensuring that Sistema.bio products function correctly and deliver impact to end clients. Core products are uniform across countries, and thus the installation and monitoring process will use similar tools and techniques. Certified technicians conduct installations. These include Sistema.bio India employees, partner organizations or independent contractors. A certified technician also has the capacity to conduct diagnostic visits, complete a full installation checklist, provide training to the family in the use of the system and conduct follow-up monitoring and service visits. Technicians use smartphone data collection tools that allow data collection to be paired with GPS locations, photos, and timestamps.
